Synopsis[]
Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie and Dawn—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve. Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.[1]
Plot[]
Struggling doorknob salesman Steve breaks into a mine to fulfill a childhood dream when he discovers the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal that, when combined, create a portal which transports him to the Overworld, an alternate dimension where terrain is made of easily manipulated cubes. He crafts his own paradise, but stumbles across a portal to the Nether, a hellish world, and is imprisoned by Malgosha, the gold-obssessed piglin ruler of the Nether who gravely hates creativity. Knowing that the Orb would allow her forces to control the Overworld, Steve sends Dennis, his dog, to hide it along with the Crystal under his bed in the real world.
Years later, 1980s video game champion Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison owns a failing video game store in Chuglass, Idaho. He heads to a storage auction to acquire items to sell for cash, ultimately winning the contents of Steve's old house. While searching through the items and particularly hoping to find a valuable Atari Cosmos, he finds the Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal among Steve's old belongings instead. Siblings Henry and Natalie move to Chuglass after the death of their mother. They meet Dawn, their real estate agent who wants to open a petting zoo. On Henry's first day of school, he gets into trouble when his makeshift jetpack malfunctions and destroys a nearby mascot statue from a potato chip factory. To avoid trouble and expulsion, Henry pretends that Garret is his uncle who takes him to the video game store to discuss his options. Henry accidentally combines the Orb with the Crystal, leading him and Garrett to the mine. However, Natalie is worried about Henry mission and calls Dawn who correctly guesses Henry's location she tracks via Natalie's phone. The four reunite and all ultimately sucked into the portal and arrive in the Overworld. Having been alerted that the Orb has returned, Malgosha releases Steve from his prison in the Nether to reclaim, bluffing that she holds Dennis hostage.
Henry learns how to build and crafts a wooden fortress while fighting off the monsters at night. Attempting to get inside, Garrett accidentally destroys the Earth Crystal in the commotion. Steve arrives to save everyone and defeat the monsters as sunrise approaches, then tells them that they have to head to the Woodland Mansion for a replacement Crystal which they need. He follows them to a nearby village to prepare for their quest and demonstrates how to craft new resources. Unfortunately, the piglins, seeking the Orb, launch a raid upon the village. Steve, Garrett and Henry narrowly escape, but Natalie and Dawn are separated and discover Dennis. Malgosha retaliates by sending out the Great Hog. When Steve mentions that he has a large horde of diamonds, Garrett becomes interested and demands access as a condition of handing over the Orb. They find the hoard, but Henry is angered by the detour and worries about Natalie's safety. When the Great Hog arrives, they manage to flee by using minecarts and the Hog is destroyed by creepers. Arriving at the mansion, Steve and Garrett attempt to distract its resident pillagers while Henry acquires the Earth Crystal and the Ender Pearl which can facilitate only one teleport, but Malgosha returns with a new Great Hog and blows up the bridge leading to the mansion. Steve and Henry lose the Orb, but escape as Garrett sacrifices himself in the blast.
The two awaken with Dawn, Natalie and Dennis in a mushroom house that they built. Malgosha uses the Orb to superpower the Nether portal, blotting out the sun and declaring war on the Overworld. The party creates an arsenal of weapons and an army of iron golems to meet the invasion force. Henry throws the Ender Pearl to teleport himself to the Crystal and seize it which restores the sun and kills Malgosha and the piglins who are all no longer a threat, but leaves him in freefall. Garrett, having previously survived the blast by riding a flying ghast, rescues Henry. The party returns to Chuglass where they eventually create the successful video game Block City Battle Buddies. Dawn opens her zoo with Dennis as an attraction, Natalie begins teaching self-defense classes, Henry successfully completes his jetpack, and Steve and Garrett operate the game store which they revitalize. In a post-credits scene, Steve returns to his old house in the real world to reclaim any possessions he left in the attic and meets its new resident, a woman named Alex.

Background[]
After a series of offers from Hollywood producers to create a Minecraft-related television series and a crowdfunding campaign for a fan film being shut down by Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Perrson,[2][3][4] Persson revealed that Mojang Studios was in talks with Warner Bros. Pictures to develop an official Minecraft film in February 2014.[5][6] Later in October, Mojang CCO Vu Bui stated that the movie was early in development, and would be a "large-budget" production. He also said that the film might not be released until at least 2018.[7][8]
